In My Ancestral Garden...

Today hasn't been a very successful day in locating research on Alexander Sutherland. I have been searching all day long on the different web sites after "Googling" his name and birth date. I keep finding the same information over and over; it's weird though, because being a member on Ancestry.com, I have come across several other members trees that have his parents listed as two separate couples- different names and all that. Very confusing as I haven't found anything concrete yet. The research I have so far states that Samuel J. Sutherland and Jane Barbour Sutherland are his parents, then I come across several members' trees on Ancestry's web site which states the opposite- the parents names were listed as John Sutherland (1726-1781) and Jean McCleland (1720-1789)- in those days it just seems strange that Jean is 6 years older than her husband, John Sutherland. In this day and age it doesn't sound so odd, but back then, I'm not so sure. It was usually older men and younger women, some women in fact were just mere girls of 12 or 13 years of age when they married. Does this not seem strange to you? Or is it just me over analyzing again? Probably the latter :)

If I'm doing my math correctly, Alexander Sutherland was born in 1743 and his wife, Margaret Bryan was born 1771~ that would make Alexander about 28 years older than she. I have paperwork that my Cornett family gave to me that has all the names and dates and whatever else needed to be compiled together with photos, obituaries, etc. This paperwork lists Jane Barbour and Samuel J. Sutherland as the biological parents of Alexander. I just need something more concrete such as a birth certificate or some kind of other document that would have his parents names on it.

Is it morning already? I feel like I just fell asleep not too long ago. Have you ever felt that when doing research, you get so involved in it, that you dream about it too? I think that's what I did. So it's 8 a.m. here in Hawaii and I am up and at it again. I am actually trying to locate more information to share with you about my Sutherland family, but on a more personal level. The Sutherlands' that I am seeking were born in Scotland around the 1700-1800's. I am definitely interested in Alexander Sutherland who was born in 1743(one source says he was born in 1755) and died in 1843, as far as I can tell he married a Margaret Bryan. I just need to find that missing link of information that I have been looking for. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack! But I did come across another blogger site, that has loads of information pertaining to the Sutherland's of Scotland and other surnames involved; if you are searching for your Sutherland roots as I am, it may interest you to just take a look at it. You might find a connection here on this site; I think I will also be sending an e-mail to collaborate further with the researchers that gathered this information to see if I can find my missing connection.

I am sure that every Sutherland family may have an "Alexander" somewhere in its' family, as it was a pretty common name. I have yet to find out what his middle name was, but someone put a bug in my ear that it may be the "Albert Sutherland" I was searching for awhile back. Alexander Sutherland was one of the original pioneers of Grayson County, Virginia.

Alexander came to America from Scotland as a Captain in the British Army. After the Revolutionary War he decided to remain in America, and he was given a land grant of 114 acres in what was then, Montgomery County and is now and Grayson County, Virginia due to the sectioning off of land.

Alexander Sutherland

I have been searching for Sutherland family stories on the web and finally came across a family website that tells a story of Alexander Sutherland. I'll share the link below once I've shared the story with you. As you know already from reading past blog posts that I have a website that I have been using to put a family tree together. It has been a great resource to me, to keep names and dates in one place; it's great to refer to them as I can get confused with so many like names and dates running through my head.  Alexander is on my family tree on this site: Branches of my Tree :) 


Alexander was born in 1743 in Scotland; he must have migrated to the American colonies while being a British soldier fighting in the Battle of Bunker Hill, or so the story goes. After the war, he was reported to be living in Wythe County, Virginia and married Margaret Elizabeth Bryan, who was only 13 when she married Alexander; he was a successful farmer who acquired a lot of land. How much though? Continuing on, Alexander was said to live to be 101 years of age; this sounds correct as his death record states that he passed in the year 1843. In the story, it states that he may have been the son of the Grand Duke of Scotland but has yet to be confirmed. Unless of course Samuel J. Sutherland was the "Grand Duke"? The research I have gathered lists Samuel as his father, so this is probably an inaccurate statement. He supposedly received a grant of land from his unknown father and the state of Virginia. Again, I'm not sure that his father was this unknown person the website speaks of.

Who Were Samuel James Sutherland's Parents?

From my last posting, I explained that Samuel J Sutherland was my 5th G-grandfather. I know who his parents are as far as their names go and when they were born, but I have nothing else to go on. This is what I have so far :). 

• Fathers Name: Albert James Sutherland, born on March 21,1693--(Midlothian, Edinburgh, Scotland); he died on April 16, 1759
• Mothers Name: Adeline Russell, born circa 1695,  in Edinburgh,Scotland. 

There has to be some type of information out there somewhere! If you can help, please leave me a comment on this posting.

Samuel James Sutherland

This is the information I have found so far Samuel J Sutherland. It took awhile to find it through internet searches. Thank God for Google! Samuel J. Sutherland is my 5th Great grandfather. Are you are wondering how this relation exists? It's very simple.. my 3rd great grandfather is David "Blue" Cornett who married Phebe "Feby" Sutherland, who were married on February 22, 1826! Good luck to those of you who are searching these lines. It is becoming more difficult as we go back in time; the names are very similar to other ancestors, and it seems that some names were very popular as they went down the line.
